This happened to my new(unused) xbox 360 hd dvd player in couple of minutes of use. I opened the case and the same capacitor was busted. Need to find a new capacitor.

Yes, it does not matter if you used or not. Cap got old and dry after some years. They used not so good one. Player should still work after replacement. Take at least 1000uF/16V

This happened exactly the same way to mine a few minutes ago. At first I thought I'd gone and plugged in the wrong PSU adapter, but no - sure enough it's a PSC24W-120. I plugged in the USB cable first then power, and switched on at the socket. Within about 20 seconds there was smoke coming out. Haven't touched the drive in 6-8 years.

As I thought, the same will happen to a lot of other drives. Please tell us later if you managed to get it work again after replacing the capacitor.

Last used OK about 5 years ago. Last week the drive did not make a noise or smoke, it just lived for a few minutes and then drive motor stopped and could not eject HD DVD disc. So turned it off and found this site informative site. Sure enough the Sanyo 1500uF/16V was bulging and residue on side. Replaced with Panasonic EEUEB1C102 - 1000 µF, 16 V, EB. It's working again!!! But should I replace with a 15000µF cap? Will this cause damage over time if don't?

This one died pretty quite :D I did not measured the ripple on that cap at all, so it is difficult to say how much the difference is between 1000µF and 1500µF. Smaller caps (body size) dry faster then bigger one, so if you want to use your HDDVD drive in 20years again, just put the bigger one in. 1000µF should do for now :) Thanks for sharing this information. It looks like this cap is the weakest spot of this drive.

Thanks for this post :) I recently bought a X360 HD DVD Player from CeX. When it came i connected player to an electric outlet and about one minute after i start playing movie, a smoke came out from the inside. About day later i bought a new capacitor. Today i replaced an old capacitor and the player work just fine :D

Just happened for my new out of the box never used drive too. I'm kinda new to the entire capacitor game. How long do I have to get it replaced? Is a week still fine? Or should I remove the capacitor as fast as possible and then put the new replacement in? Also has anyone a good link where to buy one, a capacitor in Europe? Would appreciate a answer

Hi Tobias, I would say replace the cap within 1 month. And clean thoroughly the PCB with alcohol. If you from Germany, you can get el caps at https://www.conrad.de/ or https://www.reichelt.de/

Many thanks for posting this, I just had this happen to me! Plugged in the player and next thing I knew smoke was billowing from the holes in the back. I have a new cap on the way and everything should be like new! Any suggestions on removing the glue?

Hi Darryl, use scalpel or sharp thin knife to precut the glue close and alongside the pcb (be careful close to other smd components) then use hot fan to make it warm, just before you solder it out.
